What is the Gospel?
I have made a decision that from now on I’m going to attempt to be more consistent in writing on here. I don’t always know what I’ll write but I want to introduce you all (whoever actually reads this) to different resources, other people’s ideas and from time to time my own thoughts.
Currently I am reading a book entitled “What is the Gospel?” by Greg Gilbert. I’m really enjoying the book and I believe Gilbert does a great job of laying out what the Gospel really is. For example, if someone asked you what is the gospel, what would you say? So many times people give explanations to what the gospel is that make absolutely no sense. Here’s an example from the book that I found interesting.
“The good news is, God wants to show you his incredible favor. He wants to fill your life with “new wine,”but are you willing to get rid of your old wineskins? Will you start thinking bigger? Will you enlarge your vision and get rid of those old negative mind-sets that hold you back?”
That was someone’s explanation of the gospel? I have two bachelors degrees and a masters degree. I don’t think I’m the brightest apple on the tree but I don’t think I’m the dullest either. And I can say with complete honesty that that explanation of the gospel makes zero sense to me. Does it make sense to you? Do you feel that by reading that explanation you have a clearer understanding of what being a follower of Jesus Christ is all about?
So what about you? If a person who had no idea what Christianity was and asked you, what is the gospel. What would you say? If we’re followers of Christ, shouldn’t our answer actually point people to who Christ is and what He did? My next few posts will be on this book, so if you need a new book check this one out.
Peace & Love,
